I will be attending both sessions. They should both be interesting- Rich Villa is a very entertaining speaker and RtI is a hot topic for us future educators.

I plan on attending both as I am concurrently in the law class and it is - required...

I plan on doing the reflection for computer class on Rich's speech as the future of education involves technology. And even if I am resistant to utilization of a mac in jeff's class because it takes me longer to do the assignment:) I love technology.. always have and always will :)

RtI stands for response to intervention. Philosophically and legally it is an attempt to desegregate special education. It is meant to replace the discrepancy model of assessing a student by evaluating the difference between their ability and their acheivement during the prereferral phase-and then recommending an IEP.

It is a system of early intervention and of performing quick assessments in the general education setting in order to determine why the student is falling behind in reading and intervene with teaching strategies and differentiated instruction accordingly.

The assessments are performed 2 or 3 times a week and the student is graphed over the course of the year (I believe 3 x's).

It is exciting because students receive early intervention as opposed to "waiting to fail" (the name of an article we read in law class) and having an IEP. This is beneficial for the student because as you know there is a stigma attached to being "in special education" (I know that my students were often called stupid by their peers and talked quite candidly about how they felt alienated from the general population of students)

EL students particularly benefit because historically their reading levels lag by 2 years and at the point they are expected to comprehend content (around the 4th grade) they begin to take a turn for the worse acedemically and are then provided services.

There are 3 tiers of RtI (each leading to more intensive interventions) which all take place in the general education setting before a student is referred for an IEP.

The hope is that if we intervene early and often with ascertainable data (the program must be implemented very accurately by experts (a school would bring in an outside consultant so it costs $$$ initially) and have the support of the teachers (both gen ed and spec ed, the principal, the superintendent etc..) we may prevent students from ever needing services.

It's success has been documented. It is 'more successful' in the elementary school setting but I could certainly have used it in my 10th grade ELA class as it is a good guideline especially as it was my first year teaching and my students' attendance was scant.

It is an exciting system which I hope to chat up at every opportunity when I am teaching again.

I attended both seminars. But I did not have any picture or video. I will try to find any material to put on my journal. I really liked the first one! Richard Villa was fun to hear!
